Michael A. KingCFA, Chief Investment Officer and Founding Partner
Michael first went to Japan in 1987 and spent two years serving as a volunteer for his church in Hokkaido, Japan. After returning to school in the US, Michael had two Japan related internships, one in the US and one in Tokyo. After graduating from Brigham Young University in 1992, Michael worked as an analyst in Tokyo for Morgan Stanley Japan for three years. Michael returned to the US and earned an MBA from the University of Chicago in 1997. Prior to graduating Michael joined Thomas White International as a Japanese analyst and worked there for two years. He then joined Liberty Wanger Asset Management as a Japanese equity analyst, where he developed a strong expertise managing small-cap Japanese equity portfolios. At Liberty Wanger he managed up to $1bn in assets and was directly responsible for the screening, analysis, trading decisions and management of Japanese equities. Michael’s frequent trips to Japan for Liberty Wanger provided constant feedback on the market and gave him access to senior management. He visited over 100 small- and mid-cap Japanese companies a year which gave him insight into corporate practices and mindsets. Michael speaks and reads Japanese fluently. |
